Dieting...Whatever It Takes

One of the reasons I do this blog is so that I can have a place to put things that inspire me. I am going to attempt to lose weight this year and I am looking for anything that will help me.

52 tips to change your life in 2009
By Liz Doup, Nick Sortal and John Tanasychuk
Published in the San Diego Union Tribune

The problem with New Year's resolutions is that they're way too big.
Lose 30 pounds! Work out every day of the week! Quit eating sweets!
We've been there and we know: Big resolutions lead to big disappointments when our resolve starts to soften around Feb. 1.
So for 2009, we recommend a new tack: Start small. Very small.
With this in mind, here are 52 small tips. One for every week of the year.
We can't guarantee miracles. But we can guarantee that each small tip represents a practical and manageable change for the better.
1. Drink diet soda instead of regular.
2. Keep a packed gym bag in your car at all times. That way you're always ready to work out.
3. By noon tomorrow, do something that has you in a full sweat.
4. When you go into the boss's office, balance on one leg. It will strengthen your core.
5. Include two servings of fruit or veggies at every meal.
6. Pick out a 5K or bike ride in your community and pay your registration fee well in advance. That way you won't drop out.
7. Tell a friend that you did No. 6. Now that you opened your mouth, you gotta do it.
8. Eat from a salad plate instead of a dinner plate.
9. Don't skip breakfast. When we're hungry, we make bad choices.
10. Eat slowly.
11. Don't deny yourself a guilty pleasure. But have just a bite or two – not the whole thing.
12. Keep a food journal.
13. Sit when you eat.
14. Order one dessert and share it.
15. Only drink alcohol on the weekends.
16. If you work out in the evenings, don't stop at home from work. The mail, phone messages – and refrigerator – will still be there after your exercise.
17. Use mustard instead of mayo.
18. Keep in mind that one portion of meat is the size of a deck of cards.
19. Eat fish twice a week. Omega-3 fatty acids are good for the heart.
20. Bookmark prevention.com on your computer and read it during your lunch hour.
21. Always have salad dressing on the side.
22. Eat your last meal of the day at least three hours before bedtime.
23. Curtail your treat consumption. If you're eating a bowl of ice cream every night, it's no longer a treat. It's a habit.
24. Bake, grill, microwave or steam foods instead of frying.
25. Set little goals and reward yourself, but not with food.
26. If you work out in the mornings, set your clothes out the night before so you'll get dressed by rote.
27. When ordering in a restaurant, ask the server to bring you half of the meal and to set the other half aside to take home. That way, it won't even tempt you on your plate.
28. Use olive oil on bread instead of butter.
29. Substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream – a healthier choice without compromising taste.
30. Skip sugar-laden exercise drinks. You're probably not working out hard enough to need the electrolytes they provide. Instead, have watery fruits such as watermelon or grapes in addition to water for hydration.
31. Choose egg whites instead of whole eggs.
32. Taste food before adding salt.
33. Trim all visible fat from meat.
34. Use fat-free or 1 percent dairy products.
35. Substitute sweet potatoes for white potatoes. More flavor and better nutrition!
36. Gradually shift from eating white-flour pasta to whole-wheat by mixing half of each until you're accustomed to the flavor and texture of whole wheat.
37. And on that note, eat whole wheat instead of white bread.
38. Park far from an entrance and walk instead of driving around to find a closer spot. Saves gas, too.
39. Rather than sitting and having a conversation, take a walk with a friend or loved one to talk about the day's events.
40. Before you eat a calorie-laden treat, go to caloriesperhour.com to see how long you must exercise to burn the calories.
41. Combine a small bit of protein with carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar from spiking and making you feel hungry. For example, add a few nuts to your fruit snack.
42. Always keep nuts and dried fruit with you so you don't get hungry.
43. Instead of eating whole almonds, eat slivers. You'll feel like you're eating more.
44. Make working out a family affair. While your kids are on the ball field, jog around the park.
45. Find workout activities your family can do together. Ride bikes, hike or jog.
46. Alter your exercise routine to avoid getting bored. If you take an aerobics class one day, try yoga another.
47. Get a workout partner so you encourage each other.
48. Schedule your workout like an appointment so skipping the gym is not an option.
49. Create a daily log of fitness activities with specific goals, then keep track of them.
50. Check out several exercise CDs or tapes from your local library. Try them all and buy the ones you like.
51. Go to your local track with a stopwatch once a month and time yourself for a full-out, one-lap sprint.
52. When you're home watching TV, sit on a large exercise ball, rather than the couch, to tighten your core.

20 Tips for a Positive New Year

20 Tips for a Positive New Year
by Jon Gordon http://www.jongordon.com/
1. Stay Positive. You can listen to the cynics and doubters and believe that success is impossible or you can know that with faith and an optimistic attitude all things are possible.
2. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement: My purpose is_______________________.
3. Take a morning walk of gratitude. It will create a fertile mind ready for success.
4. Instead of being disappointed about where you are think optimistically about where you are going.
5. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
6. Transform adversity into success by deciding that change is not your enemy but your friend. In the challenge discover the opportunity.
7. Make a difference in the lives of others.
8. Believe that everything happens for a reason and expect good things to come out of challenging experiences.
9. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
10. Mentor someone and be mentored by someone.
11. Live with the 3 E's. Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy.
12. Remember there’s no substitute for hard work.
13. Zoom Focus. Each day when you wake up in the morning ask: “What are the three most important things I need to do today that will help me create the success I desire?” Then tune out all the distractions and focus on these actions.
14. Instead of complaining focus on solutions. It’s the key to innovation.
15. Read more books than you did in 2008.
16. Learn from mistakes and let them teach you to make positive changes.
17. Focus on “Get to” vs “Have to.” Each day focus on what you get to do, not what you have to do. Life is a gift not an obligation.
18. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________.
Today I accomplished____________.
19. Smile and laugh more. They are natural anti-depressants.
20. Enjoy the ride. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy it.

Birthday Party

Oh what fun we had at my girlfriend's 60th birthday party. It was hosted by another girlfriend who was dog sitting at a gorgeous home in McGonagle Ranch. It was a beautiful setting for about 15 girlfriends to just relax, catch up with each other, eat great food, and of course, take pictures.

New Year 2009

Christmas was really great this year. It's the first year in my life I didn't get many presents. I got a couple from my sister, but that's it...and it was still an awesome Christmas. It may sound corny but having the opportunity to be with my whole family is totally the best present. We had a Christmas Eve party at our house. The food was good, the company was great, and the little kids, grandsons and neice, got presents. Neice is a doll and she's just old enough to get that she likes getting stuff. Course grandsons have known about that for awhile now. I think they all had fun. Mom and Dad were in excellent spirits, which was fun. Here's a pic of our gathering.

Then on Christmas day, hubby and I went to sister's house and had another great time. She got a Wii and we played the bowling game. That was so fun. The food was really good there. I took a great pic of my sister and would love to put it here, but she would kill me so I won't.

The furry brothers got a new tree house.
I'm really praying we all have a fantastic 2009! I haven't quite finished my resolution list, but I'll publish it soon.

Christian the Lion

Holy Cow...a new year. I hope it's the best year ever...for all of us. I just came across this amazing video. I had to put it here for you and for me because it truly shows the ultimate power between man and beast. If you know me, you know I love animals. This video brought me to tears. How awesome! Please visit Christian the Lion for inspiration and the warm fuzzies.

TWO AWESOME CLASSES

November 12, 9:30 am

I learned how to make these fun colorful Balls using Pigment Powders. I got so excited I started teaching it to everyone. Now I'm actually going to teach a class. I love doing things that can be completed in an hour or less and still be awesome. This is one of those things.

The class is scheduled for Nov. 12th at approximately 2:00, however, we're actually starting this day at 9:30 am, with a crocheted bracelet, which will be taught be Elena Lai Etcheverry of Scrapbook Royalty. Check out Elena's blog for pictures. I can't wait to do this. I missed the first class and I'm so excited that she's going to do a repeat. The bracelets are beautiful and anyone would love to receive one as a gift.

After class, we'll have lunch and then begin the Christmas Balls class. Go to Elena's Blog for further details and to sign up for both of these unique fun classes.

New England

I'm not big on Halloween, but I love Fall. Having just returned from New England, I am totally enamored with Fall colors this year. Here are a couple of pics from a trip my sister and I took to New Hampshire. Spent a couple of weeks and had the best time. Stayed with sister's step-daughter/friend and family in their lovely home. Went to Maine, Kennebunkport, Boston, Connecticut. Four of us went to Maine on a scrapbooking weekend. It was all about friends, laughter, food and scrapbooking.

San Diego Scrapbook Expo

Oh what fun we had. Sister and I went to the Scrapbook Expo this weekend and had a blast. We literally shopped till we dropped...couldn't pass up a thing. We were even at Michaels at 8:30 p.m. buying one little thing that we didn't get at the Expo so we could work on one of our projects. OH GEEZ! We are bad bad bad. We did several Make and Takes. I learned how to do the embossing powder thing and how to make a great little box at Pugnacious Stamps and Designs or Rubber Stamp Cafe. We made an absolutely beautiful card at Ever After Scrapbooks. We went to see Elena and Melanie over at Scrapbook Royalty. The booth was just darling and they had a fun little magnet shaker box Make and Take.

I wish I had the time and MONEY to go to an Expo once a month. Too much fun. Course Sister and I always have fun together.

I think we rent a table next year. That way we can have a home base and rest, do a little croppin', eat, in between spending money and Make and Takes.

Pismo Beach

I went with sister PD and friend ML to Pismo Beach in July. What a cool place that is. It's about 5 hours from San Diego, so we did a road trip. ML had lived in the area so she drove her comfy Lexus and gave us a bit of history. On the way up we had lunch on the gorgeous Santa Barbara harbor. We also took a short detour over to Solvang, which is a delightful, touristy, german town. We stayed in DD's rented huge home on 3 acres. It was comfortable. Saturday, we went into San Luis Obispo and shopped and had lunch. At sunset we went for a dune buggy ride in the dunes in Oceano. What a hoot that was. My favorite part of the trip. I would do that every day if I could. There's an 8-mile stretch of beach where 1,000's of people camp along the shoreline in motorhomes, tents, cars, whatever. Behind this long row of campers are the most beautiful natural dunes you've ever seen. People ride motorcylces, quads and dune buggys all day and night. It's quite unique. That night ML and PD cooked an awesome dinner for us. The next day, we left around 1:00 and headed home. It was a great weekend! I'm so glad we went because DD has pulled out of Pismo so we won't get the opportunity again.

Scrapbooking Roads

Just received an email about a new company called Scrapbooking Roads. It's a FREE GUIDE to local scrapbooking & stamping stores, events, expos and retreats. It also includes on-line stores, and contests and coupons. So far they have Colorado, Southern California and Missouri completed. Since I live in SoCal, I find this to be very useful information. A onestop shop guide. Check it out because they are working on other states.
Congratulations Scrapbooking Roads on a great idea.

56th B-Day Party

Had a little B-day party last night. It was fun. The girls all got into a giggling fit and we did our usual photo moments. I love being with my family.

We All Have Them...Limitations

What is yours?
For me, I think the answer to that changes from time to time. Right now I feel very limited. This little Food for Thought opened my eyes. I need to review it and ponder it more. I received it in an email from George Raynault, previous owner of Weekenders and current owner of Symagi http://www.symagi.com/ He sends out a weekly Food For Thought email in case you want more of this.

Limitations
Can you make one cent in a year?
Two?
Three?
At some point you are going to say no.
Sooo, let's try the other way.
A lady author (Harry Potter) recently made well over $100,000,000 in one day. (True!)
Could you do that?
No?
$99,999,999.99?
$99,999,999.98?
$99,999,999.97?
$99,999,999.96?
At which penny are you going to say yes.
This is reality as you see it.
This is the Law of Attraction at work.
This is where/how you decide to limit yourself.
You simply cannot attract what you don't believe.
And your beliefs are a complete illusion. (Meant both ways)
Take a moment to think about just how much money you truly believe you could earn in any one year. Then reason with yourself as to exactly why that amount is coming to mind.
Dare I repeat, yesterday is not tomorrow. Yet you use yesterday to base your expectations of tomorrow. And you are even pleased at how 'reasonable' you are being when you do that!
For once, stop convincing yourself of your limitations (and the long list as to why!) and set a new objective for yourself. Dramatically lessen your own limitations on your income.
Overcome your own resistance.
Just this once.

The Dash

The Dash
copyright 1996 Linda Ellis

If you have never read the poem The Dash, or seen the short movie, you're in for a treat. Go to Linda Ellis' blog. This poem has been read by millions and has quite an impact. If only I could remember to live my life this way on a daily basis. If only the world could live like this.

"You cannot do a kindness too soon,
for you never know how soon it will be too late. "
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

I received this from my friend MJ who recently visited The National Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Springfield Museums. One of the memorials was The Storyteller: A Seussian storytelling chair, backed by a 10-foot-tall book with the text of Oh, the Places You'll Go! with Gertrude McFuzz perched on top and the Grinch and his dog, Max, peeking around the side. "Short of scripture and verse, this is about the most wisdom one could possibly need in a lifetime! And what fun to help all of us move onward and upward with the words from this timeless classic from Dr. Suess." Thanks MJ for sharing this inspiration.

Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy (girl) who'll decide where to go.
You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there.
"With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
And you may not find any you'll want to go down. In that case, of course, you'll head straight out of town.
It's opener therein the wide open air.
Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen, don't worry. Don't stew. Just go right along. You'll start happening too.
OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!
You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.
You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
Except when you don' t. Because, sometimes, you won't.
I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true. Hang-ups and Bang-ups can happen to you.

You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then, that you'll be in a Slump.
And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked. A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin! Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?
And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite? Or go around back and sneak in from behind? Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find, for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.
You can get so confused that you'll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place. The Waiting Place...
...for people just waiting. Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or a No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting.

NO! That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape all that waiting and staying. You'll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping, once more you'll ride high! Ready for anything under the sky. Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ball will make you the winning-est winner of all. Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be, with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't. Because, sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times you'll play lonely games too. Games you can't win 'cause you'll play against you.
All Alone! Whether you like it or not, alone will be something you'll be quite a lot.
And when you're alone, there's a very good chance you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon, that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go though the weather be foul. On you will go though your enemies prowl. On you will go though the Hakken-Kraks howl. Onward up many a frightening creek, though your arms may get sore and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike and I know you'll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.

You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Brayor Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea, you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

Here's my layout for Memorable Season Spring Into Summer Mini Album Contest. We were challenged to use an ad from a magazine as our inspiration. This is my first time doing that. I thought it was fun, but I totally over analyzed it. I learned a lesson from that.

Homeopathy

Here's an interesting article on Jamin's Blog regarding Homeopathy. Just enough to peak one's interest. I used to be interested in homeopathy...specifically Essential Oils. I think I got lazy and put it all away. Thankfully, I don't get sick often, but I want to remember this site for future reference just in case. Thanks Jamin!

The Life of a Dutch Scrapper

The Big Fall

I was locked out of the house on Tuesday. I had traded cars with T so I had her car keys and for some reason didn’t realize I didn’t have my own set of keys with my house key. I went to Costco and when I arrived home, I realized I didn’t have my keys…or my garage door opener, which was in my car, which T had. I jumped out of the car, leaving the car door open and the trunk open and ran aimlessly around the house checking all the doors in the front of the house…none of them open. Then I proceeded to check the locks on the gates to the backyard…nope, not open. Dave has this place locked up like a fortress. OK, so there is a chair with a plant on it in the front entryway to the house. I place that next to the gate to the backyard. Then I pulled my neighbor’s trashcan over to the gate. Next, I manage to hoist my chubby body up and somehow manage to swing my leg over so that I can stand on top of our own trashcan, which is just inside the gate. Good! Now, I am standing on top of the trashcan, which is about 4’ tall. I think, I’ll just hold onto the gate and drop down to the ground on to my feet and bounce back up to a standing position. Hmmmm! Needless to say, my short little plump body didn’t like that idea. It all happened so fast. When I jumped down to the ground, I landed on my feet all right…and then just kept right on going. The hand that was holding the gate was literally ripped off the gate completely bruising and scraping the skin off, not to mention tearing my nails to the quick. Thankfully, I landed on the largest, softest part of my body…my big butt, so no broken bones. Somehow, my other hand got in the mix…I think under my butt, and is quite bruised. I sat there for a minute and assessed the damage, thinking jeez what an idiot! Yep, you think the story is over…nope!

I spent about 10 minutes trying to get into the house from the backyard…again, total lockdown. Now I’m thinking I’ll try to go back over the fence, drive to where Taylor works and get her house key or the garage door opener. Right! I start piling things up in front of the gate to stand on so I can climb back over and easily set myself down on the chair that is still there. Problem is that I’m hurt from my fall and just a bit shell shocked from the jolt to my body. I can’t seem to gather the strength to hoist myself back up onto the gate to swing my leg over blab blab blab… Needless to say, I’m hanging over the gate looking at the car with the door and trunk wide open, my purse sitting in the front seat, wondering if the battery is going to go dead while I’m stuck in my backyard.

Right about that time, I see the mailman and start yelling at him. He’s looking at me like what is wrong with this crazy old lady. “Mr. Mailman, I’m stuck in the backyard. Will you please close my doors and my trunk so my battery won’t go dead?” Thankfully, he was kind of in the zone so he just closed the doors and kept on going…never asked a single question.

Thank you God, I had my phone in my pocket. I text T and asked her to come and rescue me. We texted back and forth and we both had a good laugh. I had about an hour to kill because I had to wait for her lunch break. So naturally, I did what any resourceful girl would do in a situation like this, I thanked God for helping me get through this ordeal, took off all my clothes, got in my comfy chaise, laid in the sun and tanned myself while I waited.

When D got home and I told him what happened, he was completely horrified and wondering, as I’m sure you are, why I didn’t call him. He reminded me that I’m 55 years old and could have broken a hip…Oh, thank you for that m’love! My hands and butt aren’t battered enough…now I have to be reminded that I’m too old to even try to solve my own problems. Well, I guess I won’t be trying that trick again. Besides, now I know that Mr. Paranoid has us living in a bastion. I’m thinking it’s time for a hide-a-key thingy.

I hope you’re having a great Thursday and I hope you’ll go right out and make yourself an extra key.

Jacob's Ladder Mini

OMGosh! You have to go to Hawt Mama Team Blog and check out this beautiful Hybrid Jacob's Ladder. There's a little video that shows how it works, as well as a great tutorial. Wow! What a talented lady. I would love to give this a try.
Dear Lord,

I thank You for this day, I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness.

Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things that I have no control over. Let me give the best response when I'm pushed beyond my limits.

I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak... Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement. I pray for those that are lost and can't find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don't know You intimately. I pray for those that don't believe.

I thank you that I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight.

I pray in Jesus name that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees it.
Amen
I received this today in an email and wanted to post it so that I can read it often. I don't know where it originated or who wrote it, but I think it's a wonderful prayer.

I joined Memorable Seasons and entered a Spring/Summer themed mini album contest. It's the first time I've ever entered something on the web. I'm excited. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to get my pictures in the gallery. Everyone is so nice there, I'm sure someone will have a tip on how to do that. If you want to check it out for contests and challenges go to the forum. Here are my first 2 pages.

LUKIE

This is my Mom's dog Lukie. He's a doll. I make this layout for mom to frame. The teal color is the color of her kitchen and the layout is going to be in the dining room. It's a little thank you for having me up to her house in Northern California. She and I had the best time together ever.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when she discovers that someone else believes in her and is willing to trust her with her friendship.

I love you Sis!
